WAHOOS REPEAT AS
WPF CHAMPS WITH 8-2 WIN OVER DIAMONDS
Alleah Poulson was
named series MVP |
Saturday, Sept. 5th
GASTONIA, N.C. -
Orlando Wahoos' first baseman Alleah Poulson picked up the series MVP by
smacking 2 homeruns and leading the defending WPF Champions to their second
consecutive league title with a 8-2 victory over Carolina. Poulson picked
up 6-RBI's to give her 8 for the two games. She went 5-for-7 for the series.
Crystl Bustos had 2-hits and 2-runs, Rashunda Taylor had 1-hit and scored once
and Angie Jacobs and Tobin
Echo-Hawk each had a hit a piece to lead Orlando at the plate. It was
just the offense explosion that the Wahoos would need to quiet to home crowd
at Sims Legion Park in Gastonia, North Carolina and bring the trophy back
home to Central Florida.
Debbie
Doom (10-1) picked up the win for Orlando
at the plate leaving the game after 6-innings and the Wahoos with a 8-1
lead. Kaci Clark (23-12), winner in Orlando's
8-0 victory in Game 1 on Friday night, came in to finish off the Diamonds
giving up 1 run in the seventh. Doom, who has been plagued by a nagging
shoulder injury all season, was grateful for the offensive display of her
teammates. "I just didn't have my best stuff today, but we scored a
lot of runs and that helped." Doom gave up 6-hits, 2-runs and struck
out four batters. Clark gave up 2-hits and struck out one in relief.
Wahoos coach Sharron Backus, who was selected as WPF
Coach of the Year, can now add a WPF title to go along with eight college
championships that she collected during her career at UCLA. "I just
feel so pleased and happy for the kids," said Backus after Saturday's
victory. "They wanted to win so bad and it's difficult sometimes when
you're coming from the winner's bracket position. You start thinking about
other things instead of focusing on the game." On Saturday evening,
the Wahoos were only thinking about maintaining the distinction of being
the only team to ever win a WPF Championship.
ESPN2 will be televising
a tape-delayed version of Saturday's game on Monday night at 8:00 p.m.
